Crane operator in surgery after being impaled in terrible accident

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010 at 11:03 am

VICTORIA – A crane operator is in the hospital in Victoria tonight, alive but badly injured after an accident on a construction site. He was impaled on a piece of rebar. It started with a frightening fall when his crane tipped over. He spent a tense and dangerous afternoon trapped waiting for rescue. For nearly three hours, Victoria fire crews worked feverishly to get him to safety, finally cutting him free with the steel rod still in him. It happened just after 1 pm. The Victoria Fire Department was on site within minutes. But the job was daunting. How do you extricate someone who’s been impaled on rods of steel — stuck in the cage of a massive piece of heavy equipment — which is now laying on its side in a gaping hole? Very carefully. The injured crane operator man is licensed and certified. He was volunteering his time in the construction of a new Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall. Worksafe BC and the Victoria Police Department are investigating.

Saturday, July 31st, 2010 at 1:16 am

76 thousand tonnes of waste pour out of Dubai’s construction sites every single day. Just one side effect of the massive building boom there/here. News Update: Caterpillar Falls After Buying Out China Excavator Partner

Saturday, July 17th, 2010 at 11:10 am

Caterpillar Inc (CAT) is falling in a broadly bearish market following its announcement that it will buy a partner in a Chinese joint-venture to bolster excavator production in the country. The company will acquire the 15.9% stake held by Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group as it seeks to expand excavation production capability by 2014. Caterpillar’s decision to increase its stake in China comes after the Conference Board downwardly revised its economic index for China to 0.3% in April, compared to its initial report of a 1.7% increase made on June 15. Shares in the Peoria, Illinois-based company opened at .74, and have traded between .01 and .83 over the past 12 months.

Asian Market Update – June 29, 2010

Friday, July 9th, 2010 at 3:45 pm

Jun 29, 2010 — Asian markets reversed direction to close sharply lower Tuesday and set the tone for a global stock selloff as worries for the Chinese growth picture reemerged. China’s main index closed at a 14-month low. The dollar hit an eight-week low against the yen, while crude oil futures shed more than a barrel during Asian trading hours. The Conference Board said its leading economic indicator for China rose 0.3% in April, correcting a previous reading of 1.7% increase, which the group said was the result of a calculation error. The 0.3% reading is a sharp pullback from the 1.2% rise recorded in March. China’s main stock index tumbled 4.3% to close at a 14-month low of 2427, down 108 points during the session. Shenzhen’s share benchmark tumbled 5.4%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropped 1.2%. Financials fronted the broad-market declines. Shanghai-listed shares of China Construction Bank ended 3.5% lower, while China Merchants Bank fell 3.6%. Agricultural Bank of China remains in focus after setting a lower price range for the Shanghai portion of its initial public offering. Institutions will begin applying for the Shanghai portion of the IPO from Thursday, while retail investors will be given the chance to apply next week. The joint IPO is slated to become the world’s largest at .2 billion if over-allotment options are exercised, according to news reports. Resource stocks fell, including Jiangxi Copper, down 2.5% in Hong Kong and 2.2% in Shanghai. In Tokyo
