As many as 660 Chinese nationals working on the ‘Haramain Train Construction Project’ have embraced Islam during a ceremony held in the holy city of Makkah, a private TV channel reported on Thursday. According to the channel, Saudi official Abdul Aziz Al-Khudhairi, working at the governor house in Makkah, has confirmed that 660 Chinese workers have embraced Islam.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., quits Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee?

Sunday, February 6th, 2011 at 5:09 pm

It looks like the democrats Diane Feinsten has gotten her hands caught in the cookie jar.

approved.

As reported in Metroactive, an online report from the Silicon Valley, Feinstein’s resignation followed six years of subcommittee work during which time her alleged conflict of interest stemmed from her husband Richard C. Blum’s ownership of Perini Corp. and URS Corp.

Basically she was funneling military contracts to her husband, which is illegal. So if Duke Cunninham and Bob Ney, both Republicans went to jail for their crimes. Will Diane Feinstein go to jail?

What does this mean? "the population has fallen almost four-fold to around 3,000?"?

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 at 2:49 am

I took that from a news article. How can something fall four-fold? If it starts out at 10,000 and falls four-fold, then it fell by 40,000. Right? Of course, I think it means it fell to 1/4 of the original population, for fell by 3/4, or fell 75%.

What was the starting point? "four-fold" means four times. If you steal 0 and your punishment is to repay "four-fold," then you must repay 0. So if the starting point is the original population is 12,000, then it fell by 48,000, leaving a deficit of 36,000 people, which is impossible.

Applying logic to this screwy sentence, I think the original population was 12,000 and it fell by 75%. Am I right?

I see this construction often. Am I "out of it," or do too many people not know how to speak English correctly? Am I too picky? Or does the sentence really not make any sense?

Just curious. Thanks.

Why don’t they have a "grammar" section? Seems to be a major category to me. But apparently I am an idiot who is ou
If "fourfold" means by a FACTOR of four, then you are multiplying 4 by something (that’s the definition of "factor"). Now, starting with a population of 12,000, tell me what you are multiplying by 4 to get 3,000.

Who do I contact about a building renovation at my school?

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011 at 5:00 pm

I’m writing a news article about renovations being made on a building at my school. The project began about 8 months ago and I don’t know who to ask about how many renovations are still underway and how many have been completed. Do I contact the school president or ask one of the construction workers on their lunch break? Do I try getting a hold of the contracting company (I have no idea who it is or how to?) Any help or knowledge on what I could do is greatly appreciated.

How do you feel about this statement regarding our 10th Amendment?

Friday, August 13th, 2010 at 9:50 pm

This is pulled straight from an msn.com news article. It astounded me. How do YOU feel about it?

"Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Republican who is also part of the bipartisan group, said Republican resistance continued to center on the cost and the precedent.

Some Republicans are against the notion of having the federal government take on responsibilities that historically were done by the states, she said. "They’re arguing about the precedent we’re setting of the federal government beginning to do things like school construction," she said."
Here is the link since some people asked. From this morning, it has changed. It (MSN) has CORRECTED that she is a DEM. My apologies, but I promise you that I did not change this…if you copy and paste that quote into google, you will see it pop up. I am neither Dem or GOP so my interest is solely in your opinion of the statement, not in whether she is a Dem or GOP. Still it is important and I do assure you that I copied and pasted the original that you see in my question. Thanks so far for your answers.

Go to page two of the link above (they added a second page since this morning).
I’m not mudslinging…I just pasted what I saw. Here is one more link with the exact same quote showing her as Republican so that you will see I was neither lying or mud-slinging…I am just asking a question and copied it straight to here…with type-o’s and all apparently…my apologies.

What do written news stories tell you about the writer?

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 at 10:00 pm

I read quite a bit, and one feature I faithfully read in my newspaper is the "letters" area. What does it tell us when a well-written news article elicits more comment on its construction than its content? To me it says it’s unusual to read a well-written/edited news article.

In this age of text-messaging, where more words can be conveyed with fewer letters, it eventually becomes incomprehensible to many people. That abbreviation mindset creeps into our actual writing, where we really want to be understood.

Can’t we try harder to make ourselves understood when we want to get a point across?
