Who do I contact about a building renovation at my school?
I’m writing a news article about renovations being made on a building at my school. The project began about 8 months ago and I don’t know who to ask about how many renovations are still underway and how many have been completed. Do I contact the school president or ask one of the construction workers on their lunch break? Do I try getting a hold of the contracting company (I have no idea who it is or how to?) Any help or knowledge on what I could do is greatly appreciated.
Question about Chinese Executions? Because I don't follow the news that closely?
What reasons has the chinese government given for carrying out executions of it’s people?
-The health minister was executed because he certified the use of dangerous presciption drugs that killed lots of people
-Construction workers were executed for substituting the prescribed building materials for cheaper substances after many school children died in the chinese earth quake
-A woman was executed for carrying out a rebellion against the chinese government
Construction Workers – Farewell?
Several construction workers are told that their camp / project is being shifted. So, they pack their belongings (which is not much) and are taken by bus, only to be dropped off at the Airport and being told that their Visa has been cancelled and they have to go home.
They are then being given 100/- dhs as a farewell. Even their wages are not being settled. What recourse do such poor labourers have ? Speaking to the Indian Consulate has not helped much. Newspapers have been warned not to carry this news.
And these are reputed companies run by rich locals / expats who are doing this.
How are the other countries handling such issues ? Especially, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans ? I know that the Phillipines Consulate is very proactive in ensuring that their citizens get their rights…
why are prople so easily brainwashed into believing things by the news media?
it seems to me so many people will believe any thing they read in the news papers or hear on T,V, don’t they realize those people have an agenda, and will report things that is most suitable for their cause?for example and no offense intended, the news media have constantly bombbarded the public with how dangerous a cops or firemans jobs are and what hero’s they are, when the insurancr co,s who keep statistics on all professions and catorize them in the order of claims or deaths per 1000,the most dangerous at 1 such s test pilots etc, farmers are in the 27th group construction workers 25th roofers 18th cops 92nd fireman 96th office workers 98th??? lets all try to use our heads some and not let the news media keep feeding us so much B,S, and raise hell with them when they try, we want true facts,
How can the economy be on the path to growth without job increases?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/us_economy_us_summers
I want an answer not your rants.

Why does slump in real estate market causes lower consumer spending?
This is a statement I heard very often in the news nowadays. For most people who are not subprime mortgage borrowers, lower house price means one has to save less to buy a house in the future. Isn’t that a better situation? Why should they spend less? Probably this crisis will affect many construction workers. But how many people are working in construction industry.

Why do reporters on the news think that everyone who watches the news works in an office?
They never talk about other people who work like construction workers, or drivers, or factory workers, or craftsmen. They just talk about workplace things and always reference it to people in suits and ties sitting in a cubicle all day blogging on the internet and playing solitaire. Why is this? Annoying if you ask me.
Your reaction Unemployed U.S.-born workers seek day-labor jobs?
Growing ranks of U.S. citizens are heading to street corners and home improvement store parking lots to find day-labor work usually done by illegal immigrants.
The trend is most pronounced in regions where hot construction markets have collapsed, says Abel Valenzuela Jr., a professor of urban planning at the University of California-Los Angeles.
"You had many, many unemployed construction workers who found themselves without any permanent or stable work," he says. "Some of them have gone on to seek employment by standing on street corners alongside immigrant workers."
Day laborers gather at high-traffic spots such as busy intersections and home improvement stores, looking for pick-up work such as painting, laying bricks or landscaping. Contractors and homeowners describe the jobs and negotiate pay on the spot.
Valenzuela estimates the proportion of U.S.-born day laborers has at least doubled since he released a report in 2006, when his research showed they made up 7% of the day-labor workforce. At that time, Valenzuela estimated 117,600 people were looking for or doing day-labor jobs on any given day. Illegal immigrants were 75% of the day-labor workforce; the rest were legal immigrants.
"It’s becoming more ethnically diverse. On the corners, I’ve seen white people, I’ve seen African Americans and a lot of Mexican Americans," says Pablo Alvarado, executive director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. "When unemployment benefits run out, I expect to see more."
Among the communities seeing an increase in U.S.-citizen day laborers:
• Tucson. Staff members at Southside Presbyterian Church, which runs a center where workers can connect with people offering work, have been seeing more U.S.-born people looking for jobs in 2008, says church elder Josefina Ahumada."We would say, ‘Hi, how are you?’ and we would learn that this is somebody who just got laid off."
• Arlington, Va. Construction workers recently laid off are showing up at the day-labor hiring site run by the Shirlington Employment and Education Center, says executive director Andres Tobar: "We’re seeing people who hadn’t come to our center before who are legally here and U.S. citizens, and who are skilled workers and can’t find work."
• Los Angeles. Citizens are replacing immigrant day laborers who had trouble finding work and returned to their home countries, says Antonio Bernabe, senior organizer of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles.
"These are people who used to have permanent positions," he says. "It’s happening everywhere."

How common are tabi boots in Japan?
I hear that tabi boots are becoming more popular in Japan. They are used by construction workers, but are now being used more by civilians. Would they be cool as regular American street footwear? I’m a male and really want to get a pair but if I do, I don’t know if I should wear them to school. I want to start a trend, but I don’t know what others would think. Is it like this in Japan?
