What Can I Do? In this situation? Construction?

Saturday, May 1st, 2010 at 5:27 am

I have a construction company. I am fully licensed & fully insured.
The problem I have is with 1of my clients. I am renovating a big apartment. The contract is signed.

Fist of all, the contract states the ways of payments are the following: When contract is signed I receive the first paycheck, when the job starts(these 2 have been received), the job reaches 50% of completion, reaches 75% of completion,& when the job is done the last payment.

In this job there is some electrical work, which is also stated in the contract. Once I started the project I discovered that the people that had worked there before us, did lots of things wrong. Hot wires where found hidden in drywalls & uncovered, the panel was a disaster(in contract I am to renovate) & more.
We at this moment are about to reach 75% of completion, but now the owner says he wants us to file the electrical & plumbing work w/the city, & wants the license # of my electrician. Until then he will not pay anything. What can I do?
Also He is not Answering my calls, not answering my emails and not responding to the voicemail I leave in his phone. What is the best thing to do.

Is there still sexual discrimination against females in the hiring process?

Sunday, April 11th, 2010 at 7:12 pm

I was recently sitting in on a meeting where a construction company and the owner of the project were trying to increase numbers of minority and females from the community (an urban community) where this building is being constructed. The community leaders were trying to ask that the construction company increase the numbers of female workers on the site however they seemed rather ambivalent to do so. So is there still sexual discrimination in the hiring process in other peoples opinions?

Marketing Strategies for a Construction Company?

Thursday, April 8th, 2010 at 7:35 am

I own a family-run construction company in NYC. I am 2nd generation & an Architect. We manage – mil in yearly revenue. We have a very corporate feel, with personal dedication that you get from a mom & pop shop

We just completed a .5 mil, 18,000 SF, LEED, Green Construction project that met all Sustainable Design issues

This is the next real trend in construction & life in general. I need to make sure that I grab this experience & market my company properly & efficiently. This is the downside of having a family run company. We do not have experience in marketing. We do not solicit our construction projects. We are on preferred bidders lists for state funded projects and we are considered the “big fish” in a little pond for projects between – mil

So what I need to know is how to market ourselves as Green Contractors. As far as my architectural side, I am applying for LEED Professional Accreditation. As far as graphic design, I have already retained a company

Can you get unemployment benefits if you left your job for another and new company shut down?

I was offered a job for a construction company and left my job of 2 years because I was offered double the pay. The construction project was postponed and eventually cancelled. The construction company is in business but owner has no work. Would I be able to get unemployment benefits? I have a phone interview next week. Please, only serious answers.
