Good database software?

Monday, August 29th, 2011 at 12:04 am

Hey all,

I work as the Marketing Director for a construction company and am in need to a good database software that would help me organize and store out project information. Currently, each projects has its own Excel spreadsheet with lines for each detail : Name, Owner, Size, Costs, Architect, etc. This is fine for simply storing, but retrieving the data quickly isn’t really an option.

I’m looking for a database that allows for lots of details and is easy to search. Would also like to store pictures and documents (construction meeting minutes) for each project somewhere in the database, or at least have some sort of link to find them easily.

I just want all the information in one place that is easily searchable for when I’m on a deadline. FileMakerPro has been suggested, but I want to make sure before we spend a lot of money on the program that it’s the best one.

Please help!

Amanda

Why did you chose to serve your country?

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011 at 2:38 am

We all join the Military for different reason’s. Some people think we are all felons that join for money and the completely disrespect the Men and Women that fight for their freedoms.

I was 19 sitting at home watching tv after a long week at work. Watching the news I saw A Soldier on tv that was getting ready to go on his second deployment to Iraq. During his first deployment his daughter was born and he missed it. Now going on his second his wife was pregnant with his son. Here I was 19 with a joint construction company with my brother. I was making really good money and well on my way to having my first house by the age of 20. I just remember thinking wow this guy is missing the births of both of his children just so people like me can have this great life. So I figured you know what maybe if I join they can send me in the place of someone who has already been once or twice. To this day I never regret joining the ARMY.

how much do I make at my job hourly/ annually?

Friday, November 12th, 2010 at 9:28 am

this is just for fun, but I will give the best answer to the person who is right or closest to my actual hourly rate.

I work for a construction company and here are a list of daily tasks and weekly as well:

Payroll
Estimates
Project Manager
laborer
Accounts payable
Accounts Receiving
Shipping
Receiving
Workman comp claims
Bid From beginning to end
Invoices
Purchase Orders
Scheduling all parts of the company from maintenance to projects
Ordering everything from materials for projects to parts for the vehicles and machines
All incoming and outgoing communications

a little more info:
I am not the owner, I never went to college, and without me the company would slowly fall apart after all current projects were finished if they didn’t find someone to replace me and do all that I do.

So what do you think I actually make and what do you think I should be making yearly?
it wasn’t a game, it was me trying to decide if I am over worked and underpaid, I wanted to see what people thought would be a reasonable amount to make?

What Can I Do? I Have completed most of the work.?

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010 at 4:42 am

I have a construction company. I am fully licensed & fully insured.
The problem I have is with 1of my clients. I am renovating a big apartment. The contract is signed.

Fist of all, the contract states the ways of payments are the following: When contract is signed I receive the first paycheck, when the job starts(these 2 have been received), the job reaches 50% of completion, reaches 75% of completion,& when the job is done the last payment.

In this job there is some electrical work, which is also stated in the contract. Once I started the project I discovered that the people that had worked there before us, did lots of things wrong. Hot wires where found hidden in drywalls & uncovered, the panel was a disaster(in contract I am to renovate) & more.
We at this moment are about to reach 75% of completion, but now the owner says he wants us to file the electrical & plumbing work w/the city, & wants the license # of my electrician. Until then he will not pay anything. What can I do?
By The Way, I have tried to contact them and they do not answer their phones, emails, neither do they reply to the voicemails.

Is it OK for a small business owner (contractor) to require money up front from customers?

Friday, May 14th, 2010 at 2:16 pm

I own a small landscape design and installation company. We do unique, detail-oriented design and our construction quality is unsurpassed. We normally ask for half of the money at the beginning of the project, to cover materials etc, and sometimes small payments in addition, along the way if need be. Today a client told me that ‘no other companies’ need to get paid until the job is finished, and that the money he already paid me was highly unusual. Our contract with him allows for money up front. He raised no objections until today, when I asked him for a small installment to pay for some materials. I wonder, is it really that unusual for a construction company not to finance a landscaping/retaining wall project?

Can anyone in or around Newport News VA tell me how the job outlook is there?

Monday, May 10th, 2010 at 7:29 am

Im considering a major move, from Detroit to Newport News Va but I would like to know how the job market is there. As Im sure everyone knows by now, jobs in Michigan are super hard to find, companies are collapsing like Dominos and I just dont see a real future here.
I have a friend who owns a construction company in VA and Ive been seriously considering a move down there. I would be working in the dental field but I would like to have an overall view of newport. Anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated, even if its not job related. Have you visited newport? Tell me what you thought…

Land owner needing a loan?

Saturday, May 8th, 2010 at 11:52 pm

I own land with an appraisal value at ,000. I want to get a loan to build a home on it with a construction cost of around ,000 (my step father own’s a construction company). I was told that after the house is constructed I would have about 0,000 in equity because the value of the home will be so high (very good neighborhood and the homes are selling like crazy in the low to mid 0’s and the home I am going to have built will be much bigger and nicer).

My question is, how hard would it be for someone with bad credit to get a loan for -90k for this project?
I wanted to add that I do own the land free and clear.
