Good database software?

Hey all,

I work as the Marketing Director for a construction company and am in need to a good database software that would help me organize and store out project information. Currently, each projects has its own Excel spreadsheet with lines for each detail : Name, Owner, Size, Costs, Architect, etc. This is fine for simply storing, but retrieving the data quickly isn’t really an option.

I’m looking for a database that allows for lots of details and is easy to search. Would also like to store pictures and documents (construction meeting minutes) for each project somewhere in the database, or at least have some sort of link to find them easily.

I just want all the information in one place that is easily searchable for when I’m on a deadline. FileMakerPro has been suggested, but I want to make sure before we spend a lot of money on the program that it’s the best one.

Please help!

Amanda

Personally, I would opt for a database that is completely compatible with your other office software. If you are using MS Office, I would opt for Access as it is compatible with the rest of the Office suite.

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/access/

I have used earlier versions of Access and found it quite easy to master.

Microsoft access is pretty good, and will allow you to grab data off of your excel spreadsheets.

I suggest you to take a look at Daminion: http://daminion.net

This is photo and media document database software. Multiple users can use the same database simultaneously. Your image annonations are automatically mapped to the file metadata (XMP, IPTC) so you never lost your information even if the program database crashes. Plus it’s free and under active development.

Their support is very responsible and said me that they would like to focus on AEC segment. I am not sure about DWG drawings, but recently support for InDesign and Illustrator formats were added. And MS Office formats is present in the product’s feature list.
