What is the Architect's responsibility with supervising construction?

Friday, April 15th, 2011 at 2:28 pm

An owner hires an architect and a builder under separate contracts. The architect designs the project and the contractor builds the design. What is the Architect’s responsibility with supervising construction? Is the architect responsible for construction mis-management, cost over-runs, delays or site safety?

Can someone put this into a speech?

Monday, April 11th, 2011 at 4:45 am

I need to put this into a speech, can someone help me?

The Kapuskasing River Pulp and Timber limit, that included 4,500 square kilometers (1,740 sq mi) of timber and hydro leases at Sturgeon Falls, White Spruce Rapids (Spruce Falls) and Big Beaver Falls was awarded to speculators Saphrenous A. Mundy and Elihu Stewart in 1917 and Spruce Falls Pulp and Paper Ltd. was incorporated, but no development took place.

The still unexploited timber limits were sold to Kimberly-Clark in 1920 and the new The Spruce Falls Company Limited began the development of the first pulp mill at Kapuskasing under the direction of F.J. Sensenbrenner, a Vice President of Kimberly Clark Corporation for the next 20 years. The small sulphite mill started up in late 1922 with four 12-ton digesters and an output capacity of 75 tons of pulp daily. Spent liquor was discharged untreated into the Kapuskasing River.

Early development was plagued by major setbacks. Fire destroyed the construction camp and power project at Sturgeon Falls. A years supply of pulpwood that was boomed up in the river was washed away in the spring flood. A fire at the new mill killed two workers and brought production to a halt.

In 1923, a water storage and hydro electric dam was built by Morrow and Beatty Ltd. of Peterborough at Spruce Falls. In 1925, the Spruce Falls Company Limited was awarded additional timber limits to the north and south bringing their total limits up to 11,830 square kilometers (4,570 sq mi).

In 1926, The Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company was incorporated under joint ownership of Kimberly-Clark and The New York Times. The new company negotiated two additional hydro power leases to the north on the Mattagami River at Smoky Falls and Devils Rapids. Work to build a 550 ton/day paper mill at Kapuskasing, a 75,000 HP hydro generating station at Smoky Falls and a 80 kilometers (50 mi) railway and power line connecting the two got underway in the spring of 1926. The contractor for the entire project was Morrow and Beatty Ltd. of Peterborough Ontario.

Since July 13, 1928, The New York Times has been printed entirely on Spruce Falls paper. The mill has run continuously ever since. The company became known locally as "Uncle Spruce" in affectionate reference to the steady work and benefits provided to this distinct northern community for many decades.

The mill was the focus of the Reesor Siding 1963 Strike, which saw 3 union workers killed. In 1997 Tembec became the sole owner of the mill which is now know as Tembec — Spruce Falls Operations.

Can I claim unemployment if I am transferred/demoted?

Monday, March 14th, 2011 at 7:04 pm

There is a very good chance that a previous salesperson who lost his job at another company will be put into my position. He is a "rock star" salesmen. I am a very high caliber salesmen myself but this guy has been in the industry for 30 years.

Anyway. It appears that the owner has approached this person and he will have pick on what store he works at. If he picks my store (which he will because it is where the majority of business is conducted in the state) I will more than likely be asked to transfer to a store that is in a different city. The commute is about 55 miles a day. Add on the monstrous construction project on the major interstate for the next 2 years making my drive time about an hour each way. That is not necessarily a deal breaker but I certainly will despise the commute. I know my car will not handle this either as I have been putting many repairs into it. I have no way of moving out because I will pay much more in that city than I am now. Not to mention that if I move out, my brother will not be able to pay me back the 4k that he owes me since he will have to put that money into paying it himself.

The biggest kicker here, is that the market I would be selling in is completely dead. There have been no attempts to improve it and I would basically be in the "arm pit" of the industry in our state (which is Utah by the way).

Are these valid reasons for unemployment to allow me benefits? If I were to attempt this move would unemployment allow me to claim after I gave it a shot and it didn’t work? Any answers will be much appreicated

New to using a paid web hosting service — how do I set it up? :I?

Monday, March 7th, 2011 at 4:55 am

So, usually I use webs.com to host sites and I can use it rather well. It’s easy and straight forward. I have a site that runs perfectly on there.

However, my friends and I are attempting to do a big project together. So we decided we should purchase our domain, and we looked into hosting services that had more to offer than webs.com. We paid for one, but have no idea how to set it up. :/

It uses the ‘cpanel’ (control panel), and has the roots folder and public_html. I’ve tried making index.html in there, and added the coding to it. All the necessary css and images are uploaded as well, but it doesnt seem to be working at all. When I go to our main domain (Im not revealing this), it just says
"Hello There!
This website is currently under construction.

If you are the web hosting account owner, please be sure to delete this page after you have uploaded your website. If you’re visiting this site please check back soon!"

How do I make the index/home page actually show up? We’re using webhostinghub.com

Please, only helpful answers. I know I’m pretty retarded ~ You don’t have to point that out. D;

How do I deal with the construction noise that has been going on at my neighbor's apartment across the hall?

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 at 9:28 am

I live in a high-rise condo building in NYC, we are owners of our unit, and the unit right across the hall from me has been undergoing gut renovation since June or July(!!!) of last year. It’s been a nuisance with dirt, dust, noise. However, the only thing that really bothers me is the NOISE. Because we are right across the hall, any construction they do feels like it is in our own unit, causing a ton of noise and vibration that makes it impossible to think or do anything while I’m at home. Now, I know that everyone’s entitled to do construction and noise is a part of it, so I can’t really complain just b/c of noise so long as the contractors follow the time restrictions, which are weekday 9-5 only. The thing though is that this gut renovation has been taking unusually long and I just don’t think it’s right to expect people to put up with their neighbor’s construction noise and everything else for unusually long periods of time. I am a friendly person and have chatted with the designer of the gut reno and some subcontractors and they told me that this is a monster of a renovation & that it should’ve been finished last fall(!) but, not unusually, delays happen, but now, instead of being, say, a 4 month project, it is in the 8th month. The designer let me peek in to the unit a couple weeks ago, she said they were just putting the finishing touches and the family were supposed to move in NEXT WEEK. Well, it’s been two weeks since then and today there is a TON of NOISE once again!

I’m not looking for "legal" solutions, frankly, I don’t think I have any. I believe the construction IS coming to a close, but until it is all over, I would like, at a minimum, for someone to give me one day’s notice of heavy noise so I can plan to flee the apartment with my dog (who is miserable, flinches and hides under the blanket when the noise starts, btw) instead of being comfortably home working when whatever I do comes to a sudden end because I can’t concentrate b/c of the noise. Last summer, I asked the building manager to ask the contractors to give us this one day’s notice and they did so ONCE out of the days and days (literally at least 30 days of really bad, apartment-shaking noise, not to mention the many days of annoying, but not as bad noise).

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get what I want – i.e., better communication from contractors as to impending noise – or otherwise deal with it so that my dog & I don’t go crazy?

What action can be taken if being sued for defamation of character and slander?

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011 at 11:53 pm

My father is in the construction buisness. He has been doing a job for a person since before thanksgiving of 2010. It is a big project requiring alot of materials. This person has not payed him for his work as of yet today. My father had to put a lean on the building so that this person would pay him his money so he could get the materials to finish the job. He went to the owner of the residence to tell them the reason he put the lean on the building was because the person had not yet paid him for he job.The person was outraged and is now threatining to sue my father for defamation. What action can be done?

can anyone please check my motivation letter??urgent!!!!?

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am hereby applying for Erasmus Mundas Scholarship program, in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions, in September 2011. In the following letter I will explain why I am applying for Masters Program in SAHC.

At first, I would like to share my background with you. I was born in Lahore, the second largest city of, Pakistan. I went to Karachi when I was two years old. After spending 15 years of my life there I came back to Lahore, and did my fellowship in Pre-Engineering Sciences. During these days years I went to different places of great interest with in Lahore.

Apart from being the cultural and academic centre of the country, Lahore is the showcase for Mughal & British Colonial architecture in Pakistan. For more than 200 years, beginning from about 1524 AD, Lahore was a thriving cultural centre of the great Mughal Empire. Mughal Emperors beautified Lahore, with palaces, gardens and mosques. All these made me to have great interest in history and remarkable construction of these monuments. No ordinary coldness of phrasing can express the surprise and delight with which one makes acquaintance while seeing the built heritage and sensing history and accumulated memories spread all around the Lahore.

After two years of my college, I had to select a discipline that can interest me greatly as my future career. Inspired by the master pieces around me I choose to become an Architectural Engineer. My studies led me through courses related to building conservation, which included assignments regarding analysis of built heritage. I visited many buildings varying from forts to residential Havelis (Mansions). Reports were submitted regarding their disintegration and structural stability.

I contacted some of the owners of those mansions, who were living in India and came to know interesting information, that helped me understand that a building standing in a city consist in them an incredible amount of history. They are one part of the city that represents its people better more aptly than any other part does as they are almost immortal. All this gave me a great amount of passion for my city, to preserve its true soul.

After graduation I was hired by National Engineering Services Pakistan, as a Junior Architectural Engineer. During the very first week of my induction I was considered as a team player in a Rehabilitation project. This was a very fortunate opportunity for me to learn techniques for rehabilitation and conservation professionally.

The building we worked on was a national heritage building, originally constructed in 1894 and was used by Central Reserve Bank of India. After 1947, creation of Pakistan, it was occupied by State Bank. Later Supreme Court of Pakistan took over it in 1998With the passage of time the building started to disintegrate. Some renovation works were carried out in 1998-1999, but these were focused over the architectural aspects and no concentration was laid on the structural strengthening. Result of which led during a hearing, when a concrete patch falls off the roof just adjacent to Judges’ seating.
The major objective of this job was to bring the existing building to its sustainable operational conditions and to preserve the existing architecture. Unfortunately due to client’s requirement and involvement of other authorities I was unable to preserve the true character of the building. This was not the only building that lost its soul but many conservation works in Pakistan are not fulfilling the purpose. This is all due to lack of knowledge and exposure to conservation techniques.

This forced me to precede my career in Structural Analysis of monuments and historical construction, to bring this education home. An education that concerns many beautiful ancient structures that we are fortunate to have all around us in this country and to make everybody realize that old buildings are not preserved by making them new.

To sum it all up, I like to take responsibility and to work in a team to achieve common goals. I am very motivated and willing to put much effort in my work so that the results are satisfying. I am eager to gain new experiences and I love to communicate.

Thank you for considering my application. I would be very pleased to be granted this scholarship.

Sincerely Yours,

Up to 40 illegal aliens employed on Eglin AFB special forces complex do supporters & La Raza approve of this?

Monday, December 27th, 2010 at 4:40 am

Fort Walton Beach – Authorities believe that between 30 and 40 illegal aliens were employed in the construction of the 7th Special Forces Complex, but by the time the very thorough 3-month investigation was wrapped up, so was most of the work, and the great majority of the workers were unaccounted for.

Authorities did arrest three illegal aliens, and plan to continue to investigate what they call a case of identity fraud by employees working on critical infrastructure at the 7th Special Forces Complex on Eglin Air Force Base.

Arrested were 23-year old Marlo Contreras of Fort Walton Beach, 27-year old Victor Contreras-Suarez of Fort Walton Beach, and 26-year old Abraham Garcia of Orlando.

Contreras-Suarez is the owner of H&S Drywall, but is married to a U-S citizen whose name is on all contract documents. His company has been working on the 7th Special Forces Project for up to a year and has previously worked on other government construction projects.

Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Inspector George Collins launched the investigation last September after a deputy arrested an admitted illegal alien working at the 7th Special Forces Group construction site. The man told investigators other illegal aliens were also employed at the site, which the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and state of Florida consider critical Infrastructure.

Collins then coordinated with the U-S Air Force Office of Special Investigations, U-S Army Criminal Investigations Division, and the U-S Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Their investigation revealed nearly three dozen illegal aliens, and potentially many more, were on the payroll with false, stolen, or fictitious social security numbers.

What are the two ways for CleanerWater to recover and which one is the best?

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

1. 1Contractor was a general contractor and owner of a condominium complex that was under construction. CleanerWater Plumbing Company, a subcontractor, had been hired by Zoomba Plumbing, another subcontractor, to help it complete the plumbing work on the project.

When Zoomba began using shoddy installation procedures and fell behind the scheduled completion time for the project, 1Contractor’s urged CleanerWater to correct Zoomba’s mistakes and to finish the job. CleanerWaterr refused to continue until he knew who would pay him, since he feared Zoomba’s financial position was shaky. Nonetheless, 1Contractor’s job superintendent told CleanerWater to go ahead even if CleanerWater Plumbing and 1Contractor’s had no contract because “he would use his influence to try to CleanerWater get his money.”

CleanerWater finished the work and sent a ,800 bill to Zoomba. The bill was never paid. When CleanerWater later sent the bill to 1Contractor’s, these facts emerged:1Contractor’s told him that due to CleanerWater’s failure to notify 1Contractor’s promptly of Zoomba’s non-payment,1Contractor’s had already paid Zoomba in full and therefore would not pay twice for the work. Law & ethics.
